Getting a library card

You must be 18 or older to get a library card. Children under 18 will need a Parent or Guardian with them and be able to write their first and last names legibly on our registration card and library card. You need the following to get a library card:

  • Photo ID

  • Proof of Permanent Street Address

    • An address within the library district ( the Monticello Central School District within the Towns of Forestburgh, Thompson, or Bethel)

    • If address is a PO Box we still require verification of a street address.

Bring these into the library and our staff can walk you through the process. Once we have all your information you will receive initial library access that allows you to borrow:

  • One Adult book

  • Two Children's books

You'll have these limited privileges until you receive your library card in the mail. If you don't receive your card within two weeks, please call (845)794-4660 or come to the library to resolve the issue.

Do not loan this card to anyone else, and please notify us promptly in the event of an address change or if you lose your card.

Getting A Library Card for a Non-Primary Address:

If you are a property owner, you will need to bring proof of ownership. For non-property owners, library cards can be purchased.

Under 18

Minors can receive cards as long as they can write their name and are accompanied by a parent or guardian.

If you have more than $10.00 in fines you will not be able to borrow from our library.

Inter-Library Loan (ILL)

If you can't find what you are looking for at our library, there may be another library in our system that has it. You can order the item you want that was found using the library's online catalog or by phone. We receive daily deliveries from our fellow libraries. Once processed we will notify you, in the way that you specified when you applied for your library card, that your item is available to be picked up. You will be told how long we can hold the item for you. If you are not able to pick it up in the timeframe provided we have to send it back to the lending library but can put a new hold on it for you if you would still like to have it.

All materials ordered and borrowed through ILL are subject to the lending policies of the owning library.
