On a snowy evening in December of 1913, Monticello physician Dr. John Curlette was summoned from his Broadway home to the nearby office of his brother-in-law, former Sullivan County District Attorney, Melvin H. Couch by a mysterious woman he had never seen before. When he arrived at Couch's office, Dr. Curlette discovered his brother-in-law was dead, while the woman who had summoned him there was nowhere to be found. That was the beginning of a bizarre story that rocked the community to its core and brought international attention to the village, a story that is still without a suitable ending more than 100 years later.
