In honor of Fredrick Douglass’ 205th birthday and the celebration of Black History Month, local actor and playwright Oliver King performs excerpts from one of Douglass’ first motivational speeches.
"SELF-MADE MEN ARE ENTITLED TO A CERTAIN MEASURE OF RESPECT FOR THEIR SUCCESS IN PROVING TO THE WORLD THE GRANDEST POSSIBILITIES OF HUMAN NATURE"
The first time Frederick Douglass gave the “Self-Made Men” speech was in 1859 at a place called The Indian Industrial School in Carlisle PA...a devious institution where they endeavored to strip adolescent Native American boys of their customs, culture, and heritage.
